5 Tips for Oiling Your Bernina Machine

How to oil your BERNINA

Here you can find out how often and where to oil your BERNINA and what oil to use. Oiling is carried out at different places, depending on the hook system – whether it is a BERNINA, CB or rotary hook.

How should I oil my sewing machine?

Before oiling, the machine must first be cleaned. See the post "Wellness for your sewing machine". First, remove the bobbin case and bobbin (on the 8 Series, only the bobbin). Both the BERNINA hook and the CB hook can be removed. On machines with the rotary hook and on the 8 Series, this can only be done by an authorized dealer, but that does not mean that you cannot clean and oil them.

For almost every model, there are videos showing how to clean and oil them. On some models, you can see how to oil them directly in the machine tutorial (for example, the B 790 Plus). To do this, go to "Setup", "Machine settings", "Maintenance/Update", "Lubricating the machine".

How often should I oil my sewing machine?

This is a question for which there is no perfect answer. Various factors play a role: what you sew and for how long, as well as if you embroider at high speeds.

It is important that you oil your machine regularly and not only when the machine prompts you to do so. If your machine sounds loud, it's time for some maintenance! You can do this either after a project or before starting a project or, if you work on a project for a very long time, also during the project.

Where should I oil my sewing machine?

That depends on the hook in your sewing machine. If you are not sure which hook system your BERNINA has, compare the bobbin case and bobbin in your machine with the illustrations on this overview page

BERNINA hook in 4, 5 and 7 Series machines: in this case, the hook can be removed. Although the holes underneath the stitch plate look tempting, please DO NOT put oil into these holes. One drop (no more and no less) should be put into the hook race and one drop each onto the felt of the removed hook. This video shows how to do this.

What oil should I use to oil my machine?

Always use the original oil supplied by BERNINA. It is a high-quality, resin-free and acid-free oil with the right consistency. If you finish the oil supplied, you should buy a new one from your BERNINA dealer.

If you use cooking oil, you will do more harm than good to your sewing machine because the oil turns into a thick, sticky mass after application, meaning that the hook can no longer run smoothly and easily. We do not recommend any other machine oils from retailers or online stores.

Important:

The consistency of the oil varies slightly depending on the hook, so the oil for the BERNINA hook should not be used for rotary hooks, for example. If you also have an overlocker, the oil for this is different from conventional sewing machine oil.

After you have oiled your sewing machine

It is best to sew on a spare piece of fabric after oiling. Sometimes a little too much oil can accidentally find its way into the machine, and sewing absorbs the excess oil. If you don't have any scraps of material on hand, you can also remove the needle and thread and then actuate the sewing function to distribute the oil. On some models, it may be necessary to switch off the thread indicator.

Of course, it is necessary to replace the hook and the bobbin case with the bobbin. The last post about cleaning your machine showed an easy method for re-inserting the hook. You can see another method in the video here.

IMPORTANT: The hole in the hook must be lined up with the gray marking on the hook race. It is easiest if this marking is at around the 6 o'clock position. If this is not the case, you can easily move it there by pressing the needle stop button twice (some models). Hold the hook on the inside with the right and left index fingers, with the hole in the hook facing down. Then tilt the hook slightly downwards and insert it into the hook race, where it attaches magnetically.

How should I oil my sewing machine?

How often should I oil my sewing machine?

This is a question for which there is no blanket answer. Various factors play a role: what you sew and for how long, if you embroider at high speeds.
It is important that you oil your machine regularly and not only when the machine prompts you to do so. If your machine sounds loud, it's time for some maintenance! You can do this either after a project or before starting a project or, if you work on a project for a very long time, also during the project.

Where should I oil my sewing machine?

BERNINA hook in 4, 5 and 7 Series machines: in this case, the hook can be removed. Although the holes underneath the stitch plate look tempting, please DO NOT put oil into these holes. One drop (no more and no less) should be put into the hook race and one drop each onto the felt of the removed hook. This video shows how to do this.

What Stabilizer Should I Use?

Embroidery Stabilizer Guide To Choosing The Correct Backings

One of first terms you learn as a new embroider is the word backing or stabilizer. Embroidery backings are the foundation of machine embroidery and create the stability you need to machine embroider on anything, especially stretchy knits and polyester performance shirts. For those with new embroidery machines, choosing the correct stabilizer for the job is one of the more important decisions you make when starting an embroidery job. Proper stabilization is the base for excellent embroidery. Don't skimp on backings, but also do not over stabilize. Do not get in to the habit of solving stabilization problems by adding in additional layers of backing - choose the correct stabilizer for the job from the start.

What is Embroidery Stabilizer?
You may be new to machine embroidery, but you have probably seen embroidery backings before on embroidered shirts you have worn. It's the piece of fabric behind the stitches that provides support during the embroidery process. Backings are typically wet-laid nonwovens, meaning they are made up of random fibers held together by a binder. The non-directional nature of nonwoven backings make them strong and stable for use as embroidery stabilizers. It's important to use nonwovens designed for machine embroidery - you will read on the internet people advocating the use of strange things like coffee filters, newspaper and, paper towels etc as a backing. These products can break up during embroidery causing excessive lint in your bobbin cases and machine parts.

What are the Different Types of Embroidery Backing?
There are 3 major types of embroidery stabilizers: Cut Away, Tear Away, and Water Soluble. Most backings are available in different weights, usually advertised as ounces per square yd. The heavier the backing, the more stability it usually provides. A good backing supplier will sell many different weights, types and sizes of stabilizer in both pre-cut sheets and on rolls.

Cutaway Stabilizers provide the most stability and stay on the garment helping to keep it stable after being embroidered. With a cut away backing, after you are finished embroidering, you cut away excess backing close to the design and the rest stays on the fabric. For beginner embroiderers, we always recommend using a cutaway with most unstable fabrics and anything you are going to wear. Cut aways are inherently more stable and will be more forgiving with some of the mistakes you make when new and staring out with machine embroidery. They are a great choice for stretchy knits and polyester performance shirts because they prevent the embroidered designs from stretching with repeat wearing and washing.
Tear Away Stabilizers are removed, or torn away, from the fabric after embroidery. They are generally less stable than cut aways and are used for light support, on less stretchy fabrics and items where the back may be visible - like towels and linens. With tear away stabilizers, you just tear away the backing when you are finished with embroidery. For large commercial shops, this can speed up the entire embroidery process when encountering large jobs. Tear away can also be used in conjunction with a cut away to provide additional support during embroidery without adding additional bulk to the finished garment.
Water Soluble Stabilizers dissolve when immersed in water. There are two types of water soluble stabilizers (WSS) a film type called Badgemaster and a nonwoven fabric type called Vilene. Both work the same way and it's personal preference which one you use. WSS should be mostly used for free standing lace (FSL) type applications, where you need the backing to 100% disappear. Remember, this backing dissolves in water, so if you use it as a regular stabilizer you will lose stabilization under the stitches once it rinses away.

Where do I Start?
As a beginner, it's best to stock up on small rolls of several different backings until you figure out what works best for you. Many suppliers, such as Continental Sewing Center offer backing swatch cards you can purchase that give you the chance to see and feel the different types of embroidery backings offered. Pull some old clothes out of your closet and experiment with the different types of backing on different fabrics until are comfortable with what combinations produce the best designs.

Ruffler #86 is a specialist in the simple gathering and pleating of fabrics. Thanks to its variable setting options, both pleat depth and frequency of gather can be varied. This means that Ruffler #86 can set a pleat with every stitch, every 6^thstitch, or every 12^th stitch, as you choose. There’s also the option of sewing without pleating, without replacing the presser foot (ruffler setting = 0).

Gathering is performed by the special gathering blade, which causes the up-and-down motion of the needle to catch a bit of fabric each time and slip it under the needle.

The result: neat, even gathering and pleats on home furnishings or garments. The depth of the pleat can be infinitely varied by turning the adjusting screw.

Children should not be allowed to handle the magnetic hoops or the neodymium magnets that are a part of the product as they can be dangerous. Children and adults should not ingest magnets or place magnets in any body orifice such the ear, nose or mouth. Ingestion of magnets is very hazardous. Pinch and Eye Hazard

The magnetic hoops and magnets included in this product can pose a serious pinch hazard due to their attractive force on each other and to any object containing iron. Usually surprise is an issue--they can jump out of your hands and snap together from a surprising distance before you realize what is happening.
Fingers and other body parts can get severely pinched between two attracting hoops or items. Keep items like scissors, pins, and any other items that contain metal out of your work area.

10 Tips to Embellish Your Ready to Wear Garments

There’s an old saying in sewing circles, “ready-to-wear usually isn’t!” Too long, too short, too tight, too loose, or simply too boring! From that entire list, banishing boring is my favorite fix for ready to wear, and my Brother embroidery machine makes it easy and fun!

Many Brother machine models shine brightly with embroidery capability. In celebration of National Embroidery Month, I’m sharing ten of my favorite tips to help you embellish ready-to-wear with machine embroidery. At the end of the tips, you’ll find a link to a coordinating ten-minute video where I demonstrate planning, prepping, and precise hooping for perfect placement on ready-made garments.

Ten Tips for embellishing ready-to-wear with your Brother machine:

1. Plan your project before you stitch, matching the size and density of selected designs to compliment the weight of your garment. While stabilizer can help support the stitches, a heavy design on a lightweight fabric will prove to be a poor combination.

2. “It’s best to test!” If a design is new to me or I am unsure how compatible it will be with my project I make sure to stitch a test piece. Use fabric that is identical to your project piece or a close match.

3. Denim and most any embroidery design produces a winning combination. If you’re new to embroidery denim is great for starter projects. You can usually get great results on denim needing only a layer or two of tear-away, or a layer of wash-away stabilizer on the wrong side. Think denim shirts, skirts, and even jean jacket backs. Steer clear of bulky seams and consider adding trim to compliment the embroidery design.

4. If possible, pre-wash garments before embroidering. This takes care of any shrinkage issues and eliminates excess dye.

5. Stock up on a variety of stabilizers. Proper stabilizing is a popular topic and a subject that could cover a month’s worth of blog posts. Here are some general rules to keep in mind: Knits benefit from a stabilizer that’s bonded to the fabric. SA5931, Brother medium weight fusible cut-away stabilizer is a favorite of mine. Tear-away or wash-away generally works well for stable woven fabrics. Avoid hooping stiff tear-away with your garment. Use a medium weight stabilizer, such as SA5810, or consider “floating” the tear-away under the hoop. Any fabric with nap or texture requires a topper to keep stitches from sinking in and getting lost in the fabric. SA520 is a water-soluble, light-weight, removable topper for this purpose.

6. Use the smallest hoop possible, whenever possible, and you will have better stitch quality with your designs. In other words, if your design is sized for a 4” X 4” hoop, using a 5” X 7” hoop will work, but the smaller hoop requires less stabilizer and will hold your fabric more snugly around the design.

7. Don’t let lined garments stop you from adding embroidery. Carefully open up lining as much as needed to establish a generous flat area, and then either hoop traditionally or use wash-away or tear-away sticky stabilizer to temporarily hold fabric in place. Clip or tape excess fabric to keep it out of the way while stitching.

8. If you have a piece that is impossible to hoop, consider embroidering on a sheer or complimentary fabric, and then trim, treat edges with seam sealant if necessary, and use hand or machine stitches to apply to your piece as an appliqué. If sewing is not possible select a suitable fabric glue and glue piece in place.

9. Design templates make embroidery easier and highly accurate. There are many different Brother software programs that give you the opportunity to print templates. Explore your options and consider adding software to expand your embroidery capabilities.

10. Make sure your measuring tool is accurate and avoid switching tools unless you are sure each tool is calibrated to measure exactly the same. This last tip will work for all of your sewing projects but it’s particularly important if you are stitching a combination of designs that requires careful measuring and multiple hoopings.

Instructions to Create an Embroidered Pillow

From the grey dotted fabric cut:

1 piece of gray fabric: 22” x 14” for the front
2 pieces 11” x 13” for the back

Adhere Fusible Woven to the wrong side of each piece of fabric according to package directions. Fusible Woven will add body to the fabric, and greatly aid in reducing wrinkling around the embroidered design. This will remain permanently on the wrong side of the fabric.

Center and fuse Ultra Clean and Tear Fusible to the back of the 22” x 14” fabric (on top of the Fusible Woven).

Spray the Heavyweight Tear Away with 505 Temporary Adhesive spray and adhere to the back of the fabric/stabilizer combination.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer in either the Jumbo or Maxi Hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine.

Insert the USB stick into the machine; select the USB icon on the embroidery screen.

Select the design #35 from the screen.

Select the Hoop Indicator/Select Hoop icon and the Hoop Display will open. Select the hoop you will use, either the Jumbo or Maxi on the right side of the screen. Touch Close (x) icon to exit the hoop display.

Select the Information (“i”) icon (1). Select the Motif Size icon (2).

Turn the either Multi-function knob to the left, reducing the design to 95%.

Touch the Close (x) icon to exit.

Select the Add icon (the + at the top of the Layer Panel).

Select the Machine icon to access the built-in folders.

Select the Alphabet folder.

Use the right arrow to scroll through the pages and select the Rounded Sans alphabet (#32 on B 880, #23 on B 790) or alphabet of your choice.

Type “Welcome Home” and select the Confirm (green check) icon.

“Welcome Home” needs to be rotated. Select the Information (‘i’) icon.

Select the Rotate icon.

Touch the Rotate 90 Degree icon one time. Touch the Close icon (x) to exit.

Select the Color Number tab (1). Select the Alter Color/Brand icon on the right side of the Default color bar (2).

Select the Search (0-9) icon on the display that opens. Type in 4610. Touch the 4610 Deep Aqua color bar at the bottom of the display to change the color of ‘Welcome Home’.

Touch the up arrow (1) under the design. Continue touching the up arrow until the satin stitch bars are selected.

Select the Search icon (0-9) and type 4644 and touch the Mallard color bar (2) to change the color.

Touch the OK icon (needle) at the bottom left of the screen to proceed to the embroidery display. Start the machine and stitch the design.

After the design has stitched, remove the excess tear away stabilizers from the wrong side of the project. The Fusible Woven will remain permanently on the back of the fabric.

Sewing Instructions

Square up the embroidery pillow front to 13” x 21” keeping the design centered.

Stitch one side of the invisible zipper to the 13” edge of one of the back pieces. Then stitch the zipper to the 13” side of the other back piece.

After installing the zipper, check that the back is the same size as the front. Trim to 13” x 21”, if needed.

Open zipper ½ way.

Pin or clip front to back with right sides together.

Using a ¼” seam, sew around the entire pillow.

Trim the corners and turn the pillow to the right side. Press edges.

Position the edge of the pom-pom fringe along the pressed edge of the pillow. Attach Edgestitch Foot #10/10C/10D to the machine with the guide between the pillow edge and the trim. Adjust the width of the zigzag stitch wide enough to catch the pillow and the fringe. (photos 12-14)

Create Pillow Insert

Cut 2 pieces of muslin 13” x 21”.

Place right sides together and sew around the edges with a ¼” seam allowance. Leave a 3” to 4” opening in one long edge.

Trim corners and turn right side out and press well.

Stuff pillow with Polyfil to desired firmness and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Insert into pillow cover through zipper opening. Zip it up and enjoy your new pillow!

PROJECT Embroider a Notebook Cover

Prior to my almost 7-year-old daughter being born, I never would’ve grasped how vital it was to have a different notebook for every occasion. No matter how many notebooks she has, she still wants more, so I’m using this new-found knowledge of the notebook collectors in the world in the creation of this project and tutorial. Plus, with February being National Embroidery Month, I couldn’t get through the month without doing some groovy embroidery…. machine embroidery that is.

What You’ll Need:

Notebook (I used 9.5” x 6.5” spiral)
Rectangle of fabric to fit notebook (Denim or interfaced woven works best)
Size based on notebook – 24” x 11.5” for mine (1” extra on top & bottom, 5” extra on each side)

Embroidery

When working with denim and other high fray substrates, I always use a zig zag stitch around the perimeter of the fabric to eliminate the fraying when handling.
The next step is to determine exactly where you want the embroidery design on the cover. Fold the fabric rectangle in half and, accounting for the length needed for the spiral or binding, trace the notebook.
Using a piece of stabilizer larger than the outline, pop the fabric into the hoop with the longer side on the right.
Install the iBroidery design and follow the machine prompts. I used lighter thread that suggested to increase the contrast with the denim I used.

Construction

Fold over 1/2” on both sides and topstitch in place.
Fold in half and use the notebook to find the two side edges. Mark vertical lines on the wrong side of the fabric.
Fold on the line, right sides together, and press.

Double-check the fit with the notebook sides before stitching the top and bottom seams. 1” from the top and bottom, stitch the two side folds in place.
Turn right-side out, making sure each corner is crisp, and press.
Insert the notebook and enjoy.
